"Maman" is part of my series “Mother Earth”, in which I explore links between motherhood and the Earth, interweaving my personal experience with universal themes such as life cycles, growth and climate change. I invite the viewer to contemplate on our place within nature and the unity essential to its preservation. “In “Maman”, the large-scale canvas exposes fold on fold of flesh coloured labia-like forms; Struys acknowledges Louise Bourgeois´ archetypal ‘mother figure’ spider sculptures, scaled to simultaneously intimidate and protect beneath their monumental shelters.” (Jayne Dyer, 2024)
